  • happy birthday to me.... too good to be true???

what started out as a joke played by me could now be played on me. let me explain.....

earlier this week, i celebrated another birthday. without my knowledge, my daughter and G had been in touch conspiring together on what was supposed to be the best surprise i've ever had. G was going to take my birthday off work, drive all night the night prior in order to surprise me with breakfast in bed. how completely and utterly romantic!!!! alas, it was not to be. G's ex-wife's birthday just happens to be the same day as mine and she made plans to go out of town, as well, leaving him with their daughter. he tried to convince her to change her plans or to let him take their daughter with him, but she wouldn't. so .... he had to change his plans. again. every time one or the other of us makes plans to meet, something happens to stop us. eventually, we keep saying. all in good time.

on to the other 'joke'... i was on the phone with G as the girls and i were on our way to the mall. he was asking what he could get me for my birthday. just a few ideas, he said. i gave him some basics - my favorite color, favorite flowers (which he explicitly said he never buys since they die so quickly), favorite books and authors, coffees, chocolates....

as my kids and i were leaving the mall, we walked by a jewelry store and i decided to play a 'joke' on G. on impulse, i walked in and found the most expensive diamond engagement/wedding ring they had. it was stunning! 2 carats. princess cut surrounded by smaller diamonds. the entire band is baguettes and the entire ring is surrounded on either side by a dozen smaller diamonds. i took a picture of it on my hand and sent it to G with a note saying 'this is what i want for my birthday'. and then i waited for his response.

in the meantime, the saleslady convinced me to try their 30-day trial period - i get to wear the ring for 30 days - no money down - then take it back if i don't want it. this truly sounds too good to be true!

an hour passes and i'm still waiting. and now i'm thinking, 'oh, s***..... i've scared him off!!! then my phone rings. it's G. i ask him if he got the picture. he said he did. i told him i have the ring for 30 days, but i definitely plan on taking it back since there's no way i can afford it. he asks, 'you have it on?'  'yes, i do...but believe me, i'm taking it back. it was just for fun. i was completely joking about wanting it for my birthday. i was dreaming a little...'  'well, do you like it?' gasp!!!! do i like it???????  'umm.....yes! i love it!' i respond, barely able to catch my breath.  'well, then, if you like it that much, let me see what i can do.'  'WHAT?!?!?! are you getting it for me????'  'i'm not sure, baby....let me see what i can do. but if that's the ring you want, i'll do the best i can.'

'if that's the ring you want'????????  you're kidding me, right?????

looks like the joke's on me. i still haven't heard if i get to keep the ring past the 30-day trial period. regardless, he's considering it. that's more than i ever expected when i walked into the store.

oh, and.... i received a dozen red roses first thing this morning with a note that read,

'happy birthday, baby. i love you. G'
